Announcement of applications for the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT) 2022

The Japanese Embassy has now posted an announcement regarding the recruitment of students for the Japanese Government Scholarship Program (MEXT) for fiscal year 2022.

Specifically, there are different levels of education aimed at the following target groups:

1. Research Students – these are students who go to Japan to study for a Master's degree (2 years), a Doctorate (3-4 years), or a combined Master's and Doctorate program (total 5 years). Students can study in English or Japanese; depending on the case, they may need to take a 6-month Japanese language preparatory course and a preparatory course before starting graduate studies (6 months – maximum 2 years), or in some cases, they can go straight to graduate studies.

This is for those born after April 2, 1987, who have graduated or will graduate from university before the end of August 2021.

2. Undergraduate Students – these are students who come to Japan to study at the university level (4 years for general majors and 6 years for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or pharmacy). Students will study in Japanese; if their Japanese language proficiency is insufficient, they will need to take a one-year preparatory Japanese language course.

This is for those born after April 2nd, 1997, who have graduated or will graduate from high school before March 2022.

*Note: If you want to study at university in English, please apply for the MEXT scholarship through the university (only a few universities offer this scholarship).

3. College of Technology Students – these are students who go to Japan to study a technical college program from the 3rd to the 5th year (a total of 3 years). Students will study in Japanese and need to complete a one-year Japanese language preparatory course before enrolling in the technical college program. After graduating from the technical college, students can transfer to specialized courses or to the third year of a university if they meet the requirements.

This is for students born after April 2nd, 1997, who have completed or will complete their 11th grade education before March 2022.

4. Specialized Training College Students – these are students who go to Japan to study a two-year specialized training college program. Students will study in Japanese and need to complete a one-year preparatory Japanese language course before enrolling in the vocational college program. After graduating from the technical college, students can transfer to the third year of a university if they meet the requirements.

This is for those born after April 2nd, 1997, who have graduated or will graduate from high school before March 2022.

The Japanese government scholarship (MEXT) will cover round-trip airfare, tuition fees, and monthly living expenses for the duration of the student's studies in Japan. The living expenses covered by MEXT are very generous. Importantly, the MEXT scholarship has no obligations after graduation.
