Coming from a difficult background, Ngoc Hai once shared: “ I am a disabled student. Due to an accident when I was young, I lost sight in my right eye. My parents are farmers who work year-round, toiling in the fields, but their lives are still heavily dependent on the weather. It was from those days that I realized only through education could I have a better future.”

Vu Ngoc Hai, born on May 4, 1998, is from Quynh Phu district, Thai Binh province. Ngoc Hai is a former student of class 61HK2, majoring in Engineering Systems in Construction, Faculty of Environmental Engineering, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering. Currently, Ngoc Hai works at DBIM Construction Joint Stock Company, Hanoi.
Ngoc Hai is known as an outstanding student in the Engineering Systems in Construction major, not only having received numerous scholarships but also enjoying participating in competitions. Would Ngoc Hai mind sharing some of her achievements with our readers?
“Thank you for your compliments, but I believe there are many more outstanding students in the Engineering Systems field in that project. During my time as a student at the University of Civil Engineering, I received encouragement scholarships from the faculty in my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years. In addition, I also received the “Wings of Dreams” scholarship from Duong Nhat Construction and Environmental Technology Investment Co., Ltd. Furthermore, I won Second Prize in the “Green Building Design” competition organized by INSEE.”

Ngoc Hai, could you share what led you to choose the Engineering Systems in Construction major and the challenges you faced in your first year?
“I really love the construction industry, and it was also my father's wish. When I was 12, I applied for two majors: Engineering Systems in Construction and Bridge and Road Engineering. It was amazing that I got accepted into Engineering Systems in Construction – it felt like fate. To this day, I still believe it was the right choice.”
“When I started my first year of university, I was just like any other student. Moving to a completely different learning environment compared to high school, I couldn't immediately get used to the new living conditions, new teachers, and new friends. Being far from family meant I had to be independent in everything. At university, the general courses had a huge amount of knowledge and were very difficult. To be honest, my first year was a year where I was too focused on having fun because I was trying to relax after the university entrance exams, so my academic results weren't very good.”

Besides studying, does Ngoc Hai participate in any extracurricular activities?
"Of course, as a student, everyone enjoys extracurricular activities. I participated in sports activities organized by the Civil Engineering department and the faculty. I performed in the DAIKIN scholarship award ceremony. I participated in the 'Red Drop of Construction' blood donation campaign. I joined the Soft Skills Club at the University of Civil Engineering... All of these are memorable experiences for me."

Ngoc Hai, would you mind sharing with our readers what helped you overcome the difficulties of being away from your family while studying and working at the same time?
"Perhaps my family is my greatest support and motivation. Every time I face difficulties and want to give up, I think of my family, my parents, and that helps me get back on my feet and keep going. My teachers and friends have also helped me a lot when I'm going through tough times."
Although I know Ngoc Hai is currently working, do you have any further plans for your personal development?
“I’m quite fortunate to have joined a design consulting company related to my field of study after graduation. Therefore, I will strive to learn, study, and develop my skills, accumulating more experience. In addition, I recognize that BIM technology is a new development trend in the construction industry in the era of Industry 4.0, and I am currently researching and learning about it.”

As an older, more experienced student, what message does Ngoc Hai have for the 2003 graduating class as they embark on their university journey?
“First, I would like to congratulate you all on completing the National High School Graduation Examination. Regardless of your scores, you are all winners, winners of yourselves. Going to university – a new learning environment with new teachers and new friends – will certainly present many challenges, but difficulties and fatigue show that we are climbing uphill, while ease means we are simply going downhill. At university, you will undoubtedly face difficulties in general subjects, but these will be the foundation for entering your major. In your first year, you have plenty of time, so you should take advantage of that time to read books, learn more software related to your major, participate in clubs to further develop your skills, or if you can arrange the time, you can even tutor… I wish you all wonderful memories on the university campus!”
The Communications Department of the Faculty of Computer Science would like to sincerely thank Ngoc Hai for taking the time to share interesting stories about her life and student days. We wish her a smooth journey on her chosen path, early success, and most importantly, that she always remains as cheerful and optimistic as she is now!
